ButtonMaker uses the published tooling size for your press rather than a percentage. A 3 inch circle button takes 0.2255 inches of bleed on each side, for a cut size of 3.451 inches. These are punch diameters, not a formula, which is why they do not scale evenly: a 1.25 inch button needs more bleed than a 1.5 inch. The values match Tecre, American Button Machines, People Power Press, Neil and USA Buttons, and the tool shows the bleed zone in real time as you position your image.
At the default half-inch margins you fit 4 buttons on a standard 8.5 x 11 inch letter page (2 columns by 2 rows), and 8 on tabloid (11 x 17), because a 3 inch button is cut at 3.451 inches once the wrap allowance is added. Narrower margins fit more. Because 3 inch is the largest standard circle size, you get fewer per page, so tabloid paper is worth considering for larger print runs.
