58mm Is Not 2.25 Inches

A common mix-up that costs you buttons

People confuse 58mm and 2.25" because they are close (58mm is 2.283"), but the presses are not interchangeable. A 58mm press cuts at 70mm. A 2.25" Tecre press cuts at 66.68mm (2.625"). Using a 2.25" template in a 58mm press leaves the paper 1.7mm short of wrap on each side, and metal shows at the edge.

If your press came with a 70mm circle cutter, you have a 58mm press and this is your template. If it came with a 2.625" cutter, you want the 2.25 inch template instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

A 58mm circle button takes 6mm of bleed on each side, for a cut size of 70mm. These are press tooling dimensions, not a percentage formula, which is why different sizes need different bleed amounts. The values match Happizza, ChiButtons, Saladulce, and most badge makers sold on Amazon and eBay. ButtonMaker shows the bleed zone in real time as you position your image.

At the default margins you fit 6 buttons per page (2 columns by 3 rows), whether you print on A4 or US Letter. A 58mm button is cut at 70mm, so the cut circles need about 72mm of space each with spacing. Narrower margins fit more. ButtonMaker calculates the exact count from your settings and handles the layout automatically.

No. 58mm is 2.283 inches, not 2.25. A 58mm button cuts at 70mm (2.756"), while a Tecre-style 2.25" button cuts at 2.625" (66.68mm). Using a template built for one in a press made for the other leaves the paper short of wrap, and metal shows at the edge. ButtonMaker has separate templates for each so the bleed is always correct for your press.

Most button presses sold on Amazon and eBay worldwide use the metric 58mm size. This includes Happizza, MK.Bear, Saladulce, and ChiButtons. If your press came with a 70mm circle cutter, you have a 58mm press. The US standard equivalent is the Tecre-style 2.25 inch press, which is a different size and uses a different template.
